Day 36: Museums.
British Library=Super cool. Has tons of really old and/or priceless documents such as:
*Magna Carta
*Beowolf
*Handel’s Messiah
*The original hand written & illustrated Alice in Wonderland
*Jane Austen’s writing desk
*Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyere manuscript
*Virginia Wolf’s notebook
*Mendelssohn’s Wedding March
*Lyrics to “A Hard Days Night” written in Lennon’s own hand on the back of his son Julian’s 1st B-day card
*Mozart’s Marriage contract
*Beethoven’s tuning fork
*Leonardo Davinci’s notes
*Lots of Illuminated manuscripts—beautiful and all hand copied. I can’t believe how perfect and uniform the calligraphy is. Some books were about the size of a deck of cards, and the largest were the size of those big books Rebecca reads at carpet to her firsties.
* Papyrus Codex c. 3rd century
And that’s barely tapping into what we saw!
At the British Museum
Posing with the ferrets..."[I'm] a freak!" (name that movie)
Exterior
British Museum: Didn’t stay here long. Just went in quick to see the Elgin marbles….apparently there’s a bunch of stuff we were supposed to see for Bible that we didn’t know about…we only saw the Humanities stuff…will have to make a 2nd trip.
Sir John Soane Museum: Very cool. One of my favorite museums oddly enough. Architect. Built this house so he could display his collection of art/architecture/sculptures etc. Our purpose in going was to look at Hogarth’s satirical (don’t know if that is a real genre) paintings. The Rake’s Progress (hence my title) and The Election.
Like always…a busy day!
Xoxo!
P.S. Look where we went today!!! It was a gorgeous day! So you all should be excited for my next post as it will be full of lovely pictures of lovely England.
Bonus Question: Guess what movie and scene was filmed here in Stourhead? Answer to come...
